1. Hepatitis vaccine breakthrough is world's first for Cuba

HAVANA 26 June: In what scientists billed as a breakthrough, Cuba has developed the first monoclonal antibody from transgenic plants * dubbed a "plantibody" * used in making a human vaccine.

The antibody, CB-Hep.1, is from an "ancestor" of the tobacco plant. It replaces an antibody obtained from mice in Cuba's manufacturing of the hepatitis B vaccine and will significantly reduce the costs of production, researchers said.

Carlos Borroto, deputy director at Cuba's Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering Center (CIGB) here, said the plantibody had won approval from Cuba's medication quality control agency, part of the public health ministry.

CB-Hep.1 is the first plantibody authorized anywhere in the world for manufacturing a vaccine. It is just the second approved for human use, after one approved in the United States for treating tooth decay.

Borroto said since the breakthrough was achieved, "145 million doses have been exploited and not a single problem in their use has been reported."

Antibodies used to date in making therapeutic vaccines for humans have been obtained from fermentation of mammalian cells, a time-consuming, costly method that generates very small quantities.

Using plantibodies in contrast is hailed as a breakthrough in dramatically reducing costs but most importantly in boosting the yield of antibodies, which makes it easier for vaccines to be produced.

2. Miami emigre admits terror plots

Miami, 23 June: JOSE Antonio Llama, former director of the Cuban-American National Foundation (CANF), is considering bringing fraud charges against several of his colleagues whom he is accusing of having seized funds of close to $1.5 million earmarked for a terrorist plot against Cuba, according to Miami sources.

The finance-terror scandal was uncovered by Radio Miami in its "El Duende" feature and explained by journalist Reynaldo Taladrid in last Monday's (June 19) edition of Cuban TV's Roundtable program.

The Miami Herald confirmed Llama's exposé on Thursday 22 in an article that expands on the details of a conspiracy to commit acts of terrorism which had the participation of the deceased CANF president, Jorge Mas Canosa and various directors of the renowned Cuban-American lobby.

3. Cuban editorial: The alliance between the European Union and Bush is pathetic

>From Cuba's Granma daily newspaper Friday, 23 June:

AS is widely known, in his speech during the High-Level Segment of the new Human Rights Council in Geneva on June 20, our Foreign Minister, Felipe Pérez Roque expressed a resounding condemnation of the growing conspiracy between the United States and the European Union.

Just 24 hours later, the European Union has once again demonstrated its shameful double standard in the area of human rights, and its traditional subordination to the aggressive policies of the United States against the Third World, including Cuba, which is to host the Non-Aligned Movement Summit this September.

On June 21, the annual Transatlantic Summit between the United States and Europe
took place in Vienna, and concluded by passing a Final Declaration in which the
superpower and its junior ally present a hegemonic, neocolonial, threatening and
manipulative vision of the international situation and some 20 mostly Third
World countries.

In that declaration, the United States and its European partners once again act as planetary judges and indulge their liking for invading other nations' sovereignty and dictating policies to a group of countries that, interestingly, are the same as those blacklisted by the U.S. government for years.

What is most scandalous, however, is that the Joint US-European Declaration does not contain the slightest reference to the dramatic situation of the prisoners held by the United States on the illegal Guantánamo naval base, and who are victims of atrocious torture, much less the fact that it is Cuban territory illegally occupied by the U.S. government that should be returned to our country. Or is it that colonialist Europe is thinking about donating it to the
United States?
